The largest Living Building Challenge Petal-Certified building in New York City took three years to complete. It houses Etsy’s Brooklyn headquarters, showcasing the company’s craft while blurring the lines between workplace and habitat. The Living Building Challenge, a certification administered by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), is one of the world’s most rigorous sustainability standards for buildings.

The 200,000 square-foot space reflects four key design concepts: telling the Etsy story through a narrative journey, celebrating the art of making, embracing nature, and capitalizing on sustainable, authentic, and locally sourced materials. The Etsy journey and the tech company’s commitment to sustainability are omnipresent, demonstrated through the use of reclaimed wood, solar panels, and energy efficient luminaires among other eco-friendly features. Seem 4 suspended luminaires have been selected to illuminate the lobby, collaboration areas, and maker space, an open seating workspace. The maker space delivers an opportunity to practice and learn the art of making items and provides employees the chance to be one with nature through indoor green scaping and an outdoor terrace. The clean lines of Seem 4 provide a visual juxtaposition against the wood tables and wall that run perpendicularly while delivering general illumination and task lighting, ideal for making things. The result is a place that celebrates sustainability and Etsy’s mission to keep commerce human.
