The architect’s commitment to creating meaningful and lasting designs is evident in Rachel Carson Elementary School. More than just another neighborhood elementary school, this educational facility was built using “green” principles. Geothermal heat collectors provide about 80% of the school’s heat while green roofs, a water infiltration gallery, and energy saving lighting are just a few others of its environmentally friendly features.

Creating suitability for its clientele, the school was designed around a theme of the solar system, astronomy, and skies, visible in the art installation representing the constellation of the night sky located in the entry. Other youthful design elements were incorporated into the clean, airy, modern space such as bold colors and basic shapes, from windows to recessed and suspended Skydome luminaires.
